The Goodall Family (Mercy Ships)
Many of you will already know, but we are going as a family to volunteer with MercyShips in Africa for two years. For those who haven’t heard of them before, MercyShips is a charity that has converted ships into hospitals, docking in some of the world’s poorest countries to deliver free, lifesaving, life-giving treatments to those living in extreme poverty and without any access to medical care. MercyShips provides a range of interventions for women, men and children, including fixing cleft palates, broken bones, removing tumours, and so much more.
They also support women’s health. Complications in childbirth, such as obstetric fistula, can leave women permanently incontinent and ostracised by their communities – yet are entirely preventable with appropriate care in childbirth. Accessing safe, timely surgery afterwards can repair the injury and prevent their long-term social and physical pain. This is something very close to my heart, both as an Obstetrician/ Gynaecologist, but also as a mother.
Barney will be volunteering as the Finance Director and my role will be with the boys/ doctoring/ medical education and training local doctors. As a family we will help with projects in the local communities also, and just generally get stuck in! We just want to share the love! The ship is going to be docked in Guinea for the first year.
As volunteers, we will be self-funding our posts for 2 years. People have been asking how they can financially support us. There are a couple of ways. We have set up a JustGiving page (see below). Alternatively, a regular monthly gift, however big or small, would help us to pay our monthly crew fees and insurance costs. If this is something you could do, your donation can be gift aided by paying through the MercyShips link below, stating ‘Barnaby Goodall’ as the crew member.
Please pray for us! We want God to create good ground in each of us to allow seeds He has planted to flourish. We are really excited about this opportunity to serve God by caring for people who may have believed the world has forgotten them.
With so much love, thanks and appreciation,
Liz, Barney, Noah and Judah
